Celtic pair Tobi Oluwayemi and Matthew Anderson seem to be having mixed fortunes in their loan spells in Austria.
In August, Celtic made the interesting move to loan out two of the B team’s most exciting prospects. Both goalkeeper Oluwayemi and left-back Anderson joined second-tier Admira Wacker — a club we entered a mutually beneficial partnership with earlier in the summer.
It was an ambitious move from Celtic to send two young players away to Austria to play at a decent enough level. The plan would be for them to impress, grow as footballers and people, and then return to Lennoxtown to make a push for the first team.
That seems to have worked with Scotland youth international Anderson who has already become a regular for Thomas Pratl’s side. The 19-year-old has featured in all six of his team’s matches so far, playing the entirety of four of those games.
Admira haven’t actually won a fixture in that time. But, without having actually seen Anderson play, we’re going to suggest that the blame doesn’t lie solely at his door. Certainly, his game time suggests he’s doing more than enough.
Conversely, England youth player Oluwayemi has not been able to lay a claim to play. The keeper hasn’t even made the matchday squad for the last five fixtures. That’s a little disappointing given that Celtic would have expected him to get some game time at a decent level.

The 20-year-old also failed to impress in a recent spell at Cork City so it seems like he has plenty of work to do. As it stands, with him out of the picture in Austria, a termination of the loan in January seems likely.
It will be interesting to see what position Anderson will be in next summer if he continues his development. Left-back isn’t exactly a position where we’re blessed with loads of talent right now.
