Those with sharp ears may have noticed the travelling Celtic support belting out a famous world football chant against Kilmarnock on Sunday, inspired by Argentina.
The ‘Muchachos’ song, which became so prominent during the recent World Cup in Qatar, has been repurposed with Celtic lyrics paying tribute to some of the club’s greatest figures.
If you’re unaware of the original song, you can find plenty of videos on YouTube such as this one linked that is also embedded below.
The Celtic version of Muchachos
And the Celtic lyrics? We’ve been told they go something like:
The Celtic,
We’re the best team in Glasgow,
And we’ve done it all in Europe, when we won in Portugal,
With Cesar, Bertie Auld and big Jock Stein, when we brought the cup to Parkhead, and it still feels like a dream
And in our dreams we all still have, to relive that very day, when we won the cup in Lisbon, on the 25th of May
So I still pray to God, that we go another run, and beat the best in Europe like Jock Stein’s already done
Time will tell if it truly kicks in with the wider Celtic support, but it seemed the Green Brigade and Bhoys groups were well into giving it a good go during the 4-1 win.
It celebrates our legends and certainly looked like a lot of fun to participate in during the World Cup. If it builds in wider popularity during this period of success that could even result in another Celtic treble, there’s every chance you will be hearing this one for quite a while.
The creativity of the Celtic support continues to impress. During the Ange Postecoglou era alone there have been a number of big hits amongst fans, first started by these fan groups.
Perhaps the most notable is the ‘Jota’ song that took on a life of its own recently when it was played live on BBC Radio Five Live, resulting in singer Ellie Dixon performing it at Celtic Park before the recent win against Rangers.
