Celtic have had a number of players over their history who have appeared in some of the world’s biggest football tournaments.

The Lisbon Lions will always be remembered for the biggest and most romantic story in Celtic’s history as the first-ever Scottish club to lift the European Cup.

The legendary side will also be the last team full of Scots to make this remarkable achievement.

On top of that, Celtic have also had players like Callum McGregor represent the club at the Euros and icons like Paul McStay play in the World Cup against some of the best players on the planet.

But there is one player who has played in the final of the world’s biggest tournament who remains to this day, the only Celtic star to do so.

And right now, retired from football, he is a popular podcast presenter on YouTube who now interviews some of the best players in the world from the past and present.

Will Celtic fans remember Dutch World Cup finalist Edson Braafheid?

Edson Braafheid joined Celtic from Bayern Munich for a short-term loan back in 2010. The Dutch defender played 12 times for Tony Mowbray’s side but ended the season without a winner’s medal.

A Dutch internationalist at the time, Braafheid came to Celtic Park with a big pedigree but never really managed to hit the heights that his talent promised.

However, in the summer of 2010, the Celtic defender was part of the Netherland’s squad that took part in the World Cup and how lost in the final to Spain.

Braafheid was brought on with 15 minutes to go as the Dutch were trailing 1-0 in extra time but couldn’t prevent the heartbreaking defeat.

Edson Braafheid’s career after Celtic

After he left Celtic, Braafheid returned to Bayern Munich, where he was immediately transferred to Hoffenheim.

A loan to FC Utrecht was brokered not long afterwards, and that led to a move to Serie A side Lazio in 2014 where he spent two seasons.

A return to Utrecht beckoned in 2016 where Braafheid bounced between the first team and the reserves before making the switch to the US with Auston Bold in 2019.

The Dutch star retired two years later after he failed to make it at Auston and moved to Palm Beach Stars in 2020 before he hung up his boots.

Braahfeid now presents a podcast called Building Bridges, where he has interviewed stars like es-Real Madrid man Royston Drenthe and former Liverpool star Ryan Babbel.
