The reaction to Celtic legend Neil Lennon possibly becoming Scotland boss would be generational

There have been a fair few coaches with Celtic connections linked to the Scotland job.

Ange Postecoglou is front and centre of many people’s minds, but another surprising name that has popped up on the radar is Neil Lennon.

Frank McAvennie spoke about the Celtic legend possibly replacing Steve Clarke, who resigned once Scotland’s World Cup exit was confirmed last Saturday.

Lots of names have been thrown about, but one of the surprising ones was Lennon’s, who is the current coach of Championship side, Dunfermline Athletic.

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank Podcast, McAvennie stated that Lennon taking the reins at Hampden ‘wouldn’t bother me’, but the SFA wouldn’t allow it because there would be ‘too much negativity.’

‘A shame’ Neil Lennon can’t be Scotland’s next manager

Simon Houston: “Some of the names mentioned as Scotland’s next manager. Obviously, Ange is the name on everybody’s lips. Scott Brown’s name has been thrown about a wee bit. Too soon, eh?”

McAvennie: “Too soon.”

Houston: “Again, this would put the cats right among the pigeons. What about Neil Lennon?”

McAvennie: “What about him?”

Houston: “As a Scotland manager. Lives in Scotland. He has had success as a manager.”

McAvennie: “It wouldn’t bother me, but it isn’t going to happen.”

Houston: “Why isn’t it going to happen?”

McAvennie: “Because the SFA isn’t going to get somebody like Neil Lennon in.”

Houston: “Too much negativity surrounded to it, which is a shame.”

McAvennie: “It is a shame, but he would be a good manager. He would be good. But I think Neil loves the day-to-day.”

There would be a headloss if the SFA turned to Lennon

Whether it was right or wrong, many saw how vocal Scotland fans were towards Clarke and the team’s performances.

It’s probably a big reason why he decided to resign, despite signing a new four-year contract before the tournament began.

If the SFA followed that up by appointing Celtic’s trophy-laden coach Lennon, then it would cause even more chaos.

The Northern Irishman isn’t shy to dive into the deep end, but from his background to where he is currently coaching, it would cause even more noise than when Clarke was in the building.
