The reported defensive targets Celtic could be looking at
Celtic apparently have two alternative defensive targets to Scott McKenna.
The Scottish Sun today reported that Celtic have the likes of Chelsea’s Tomas Kalas and Toulouse’s Christopher Jullien on their target list.
It also comes on the same day in which the club were reported to have a £5million bid for Scott McKenna rejected (Scottish Sun). McKenna has had an inconsistent season against the likes of Celtic and Rangers. Signing him certainly wouldn’t have appeased supporters. The bid also marks yet another failed bid to sign the centre-back after also failing to get him last summer.
But the other two targets are certainly more in the bracket that fans would appreciate the club targeting.
As of yet, there are no reports that Celtic have submitted an offer for either player. It’s all just interest reported by the Sun at the moment. But there’s no denying we’re now in a race against time. With the Champions League qualifiers creeping up on us, it would be ideal if work was being done to get one or the other over the line.
Defensive targets surely won’t include McKenna
In an ideal world, Celtic would now drop their interest in McKenna. His reported value of £10m from Aberdeen just isn’t worth it.
Meanwhile, Celtic could easily lure the likes of Kalas to Parkhead for less than the Dons want for McKenna. After all, Kalas is also reportedly rated at £5million (Scottish Sun). It’s also fair to say he has no future at Chelsea, and with a contract running out in just two years’ time (Transfermarkt), Chelsea’s best chance of getting that £5m would be now.
As for Jullien, he has experience against top opposition in France with Toulouse. It’s difficult to be too judgmental considering many of us won’t have seen much of him. But, at the end of the day, he looks a better improvement than McKenna.
If Celtic are serious on improving this year, money has to be spent. But at the same time, it’s just as important if not more so to spend that money wisely. We know what McKenna can do, and it’s not something we need at Parkhead at this moment in time.
According to the Scottish Sun, Neil Lennon said the following on the position:
“It’s a priority area we’re looking to strengthen, no question. And we have a number of options that we’re running with at the minute.”
Hopefully, in terms of defensive targets, McKenna now isn’t one of them, and a move for Kalas or Jullien is now a priority.
