The Scottish football season ends with Celtic as the dominant force

All the prizes have been handed out in the Scottish football season after Rangers beat Hearts in the Scottish Cup final at Hampden today. And it’s Celtic who are the dominant force.

To their credit, the Ibrox side again managed to come through an extra time period at Hampden, just as they did against the Bhoys in the semi-final last month.

But Ange Postecoglou’s side, having already bagged a league and cup double, stand tallest going into the summer months.

There’s just one meaningful fixture remaining, the Premiership playoff final on Monday night. St Johnstone and Inverness CT will go toe-to-toe for a spot in the top-flight next term.

Celtic have defied expectations in Scottish football this season

Nobody expected Celtic to be in this position this time last year, regardless of any narratives that are now spun. The Scottish Premiership was so crucial, not least because it unlocked automatic riches from the UEFA Champions League.

It’s the prize everyone was aiming for at the start of the campaign and it’s the Bhoys who have triumphed.

Celtic were in disarray and had to build an entirely new squad while saying goodbye to departing heroes. Postecoglou did it all against a backdrop of criticism and those writing him off.

Supporters can now look forward to a productive and celebratory summer, knowing we are again the finest team in Scotland.

Postecoglou has already stated his intent to improve Celtic, making them bigger and better. That will come both with work on the training pitch in pre-season and the addition of more quality players from the transfer market.

We could truly be at the start of something special.

Regardless, we can look back on this season with pride. If you’d told any Celtic supporter at the start of the year that we’d win a league and cup double, with Rangers picking up the Scottish Cup, it’d be taken with open arms.
