Much of the attention surrounding Celtic’s fixture list for the 2026/27 season has focused on Flag Day.
The club, supporters and many associated with Celtic have voiced their disappointment after the champions’ traditional opening-day celebration was scheduled for a Monday evening rather than a weekend.
However, while Flag Day has dominated the discussion, there is another fixture early in the season that carries considerable significance.
Celtic’s first away game of the campaign will take Martin O’Neill’s side to Rugby Park to face Kilmarnock.
At first glance, it looks like a standard opening away trip.
Yet when the champions of Scotland arrive in Ayrshire, they will be stepping into circumstances not seen at the stadium for a long time, and that will be no more artificial pitches and playing on the much-called-for grass surface.

Celtic will be the first opposition team to play on Kilmarnock’s grass pitch
For decades, discussion around visits to Rugby Park often centred on one issue before a ball had even been kicked.
Players, managers, supporters, and even pundits frequently debated the impact of Kilmarnock’s artificial surface and whether synthetic pitches should be permitted in the Scottish Premiership.
That debate has now come to an end.
New SPFL regulations have outlawed artificial pitches in the top flight, forcing Kilmarnock to install a natural grass surface ahead of the new season.
The fixture against Celtic will therefore be Killie’s first home game of the campaign, and the first competitive match played on the club’s new grass pitch.
As a result, those in green and white will become the first visiting side to experience Rugby Park’s new era, giving the opening away fixture added significance beyond the three points on offer.
