Former Celtic icon Tom Rogic will reportedly not reunite with former manager in Neil Lennon, despite local news suggested that a move was imminent.
A story from Protathlima.com suggested that the Aussie was in Cyprus to complete a move to the capital side but this has been contested by another Cypriot outlet.
As reported by Omonia News (translated using DeepL Translate): “The reports that OMONOIA were close to acquiring Australian midfielder Tom Rogic were wrong.
“There has been no interest from our club for the Australian and we are informed that the planning team has turned its attention to other players.”
Both reports are days old but only hit the Scottish press this morning. Obviously anything can happen in football and we have no information ourselves but I’d suggest this isn’t one to get too excited about.
The 29 year old enjoyed a trophy laden near-decade in Glasgow, but is yet to find a new club having left the Hoops at the end of the season.
A move to Omonia Nicosia would have reunited him with Neil Lennon, who signed the Aussie in January 2013, but he would find game-time limited until the 2015-16 season under Ronny Deila.
Next move still unclear for a modern great
It’s surprising that it’s taken this long for a transfer link to materialise for Rogic, given that he has been without a club for two months, after his emotional send-off against Motherwell on the final day of last season’s Scottish Premiership season.
It seems to have been an odd time for the affectionally named Wizard of Oz, after he pulled out of the post-season internationals for personal reasons, with Australia boss Graham Arnold at one stage expressing concern for the midfielder’s welfare.
The midfielder will be keen to secure a club in good time to regain match fitness before the Qatar World Cup in December.
His exit at the end of last season was a surprise to many, as he appeared to still have plenty to give in green and white, and few would begrudge him a successful move after the Aussie gave fans a litany of now-timeless moments in a Celtic shirt.
