The three potential signings Celtic can pull the trigger on now

There are three potential Celtic signings the club can pull the trigger on right now.

January may have only just started, but that doesn’t mean deals can’t be done early. That’s never the Celtic way of course is it? We’ll be made to wait right up until the deadline only to be told how difficult a window it’s been.

In all seriousness, there are deals to be done right now. Several players the club have been linked with are out of contract in the summer. That means we can make an offer for them whenever we like.

And that doesn’t just mean that they can be signed at the end of the season either. If Celtic wrap up pre-contract deals, it gives the club the player is currently with motivation to sell. It can speed up potential deals that could happen in this window too.

Three signings Celtic could do with

Firstly you have Alfie Doughty. This is one Celtic need to be careful with given his hamstring injury. His manager at Charlton, Lee Bowyer, has already admitted he may not come back the same player (London News Online). Whether that was a tactic to keep clubs away however is up for debate.

A left-sided winger, Doughty would add genuine pace and has the skill to play on either flank. His injury, however, could also be seen as an opportunity. Should Celtic wrap up a pre-contract deal now, there’s no reason for Charlton not to sell. Given his injury could keep him out for the season, they would be as well cashing in right now.

In recent hours this may have become more complicated of course. Sky reporter Anthony Joseph has tweeted that Stoke City have made a move for him. Several clubs are said to be in talks with Charlton about a bid. Wrapping up a pre-contract could help eliminate the competition.

Secondly, there’s Bright Osayi-Samuel. This could be tricky given the number of clubs linked with him too – particularly in the Premier League (The Athletic).

Reports in Turkey states earlier this week that the player had agreed terms with Fenerbahce (Aksam). There’s been nothing reported in the UK that backs that up however.

There have also been no reported pre-contract offers on the table as of yet. The QPR winger would be a fine addition and would be a potential long-term rival for James Forrest.

Celtic don’t have enough right-wingers at the club just now. With Forrest sidelined we’ve had to play Ryan Christie out of position. It hasn’t been ideal, and we’ve struggled for genuine creativity down that side.

If Celtic go in and make their offer for Osayi-Samuel now, it really does force others into action. The earlier we spring into action, the better chance we have of signing him this month and becoming QPR’s only chance for a sale.

Lennon wants a centre-back addition

Finally, Preston’s Ben Davies was tipped for a pre-contract with Celtic back in the summer (The Sun). Since then he’s had another fine season with Preston in the Championship.

Celtic boss Neil Lennon has admitted he needs to recruit at centre-back (Scottish Sun). He may not find a better option than Davies.

His situation is similar to Osayi-Samuel’s. Several clubs have been linked with a move for him and he’s in fine form too (Daily Mail). That means he’s a bigger asset to Preston than the likes of Doughty is to Charlton at the moment.

Alex Neil stated in the summer that Celtic could sign him if they plucked out £10m from somewhere (Lancs Live). In other words, they’re looking to play a bit of hard-ball with this one.

Again, the easiest way to get a deal done here is to jump in early. Wrap up the pre-contract with Davies and watch his price-tag drop as Preston come to terms with losing a key player for nothing in the summer.

The only way we can sign any of these players if by moving quickly. So far, there’s no reported movement from Parkhead as the first week of January continues.

In other news, a former Celtic striker isn’t totally convinced by a potential future signing for the club.
