Newcastle United supporters are adamant that they want reported Celtic target Christian Atsu to leave their club.

Sports World Ghana reported earlier this week that the Hoops had made contact with Newcastle over potentially sealing a deal for the winger this summer.

With just under a year remaining on the player’s contract, it would appear his time in the North East is coming to an end.

But it seems that the Newcastle supporters are pretty pleased with that idea. Reacting to Atsu’s link to Parkhead, more than a few were open to letting him depart:

An unfair rep?

It’s clear that there are plenty of Newcastle fans who want Atsu to depart, but it’s not as if he’s been a massive waste of the £6.2million they paid for him (Daily Mail).

The winger, who can play on either the left or right, has made 120 appearances for the Toon over the course of the three years he’s been at the club. Granted, with only eight goals and 10 assists in that period, Newcastle fans are entitled to have expected more (Transfermarkt).

Yet plenty of players who have struggled to make their mark down south have managed to revive their careers in Scotland. We had one last season in Fraser Forster, who had almost been forgotten about at Southampton yet was a superstar in Glasgow.

And plenty of players with lesser pedigree than Atsu have come up and been a success too. Perhaps it’s simply a case of finding the right club.

Atsu’s arrival would also provide Celtic with some vital cover down both flanks. With no back-up to James Forrest or Mohamed Elyounoussi, the Ghanaian could fill a hole in our squad.

A potential fee for Atsu hasn’t been reported, but it would surely be an affordable option for Celtic if the club wish to pursue it. Considering he has less than a year remaining on his deal, Newcastle aren’t in a great position to demand a premium sum.

For now, it’s all just speculation to us until Lennon confirms an approach. But Atsu’s versatility suggests he could be a decent addition if the club were to invest in him, irrespective of what some Newcastle fans think of him.

In other news, a Premiership goalkeeper has looked ahead to potentially getting fans back for Celtic’s visit.
