Three Celtic players have been named in the World Soccer 500, a list of the most important footballers in the world.

The exhaustive list contains Kyogo Furuhashi, Callum McGregor and David Turnbull. Former Celts Kieran Tierney and Virgil van Dijk also make the annual list, which features the biggest talents in the game.

The World Soccer 500 are listed in the Autumn issue of the magazine.

On Kyogo Furuhashi [World Soccer Magazine, print edition p44], the World Soccer 500 said that he’s Japan’s biggest hope of goals in their World Cup Qualifying campaign, and highlights that he was still the J-League’s top scorer in August.

Callum McGregor gets a nod for taking up the Celtic captaincy, and rebuffing interest from Leicester City in the summer [p57]. Turnbull, meanwhile, is described as a bright spot in Celtic’s tough 2020 [p68].

It’s quite the acclaim for the Celtic trio. Furuhashi, a star in two countries, is little surprise. The importance of Callum McGregor means he was always a good shout. Turnbull, for his age and accolades, makes sense too.

A few rumoured Celtic summer “targets” are in there, as well.

Northern Ireland international Ali McCann makes the list. Piero Hincapié, a star for Ecaudor and linked with Celtic in the summer, is also there.

An annual list to determine who’s who in world football, getting into the World Soccer 500 is prestigious. All the big hitters you’d expect are there, from Neymar to Mbappé, Messi to Ronaldo and so on.

A combination of hidden gems and big names, the list isn’t a subjective rating of players, so much as it is a discussion about who matters.

To Celtic, it’s inarguable that any of Furuhashi, Turnbull or McGregor aren’t important to Celtic’s chances across multiple competitions.

Unranked, it’s a great resource for football fans. If you know every single name, then you’re a force to be reckoned with in any decent football quiz, that’s for sure.

For the trio, it’ll be about team accolades. The Celtic players will be desperate to regain some pride after the difficulties of 20-21, as well as maintaining an international reputation with appearances for their respective counties. Both are important.

The World Soccer 500 will cause plenty of debate, no doubt. But what’s not up for debate is that three of Celtic’s players are right up there.
