It’s time for Celtic to play with Odsonne Edouard and Timothy Weah

After a drab 0-0 stalemate against Aberdeen, it’s now time for Celtic to go with both Odsonne Edouard and Timothy Weah up front.

The Dons played us like a fiddle on Saturday. Sitting a bank of five just in front of their back four, they set two defensive blocks for Celtic to break through.

Neil Lennon tried different things on the day. Scott Sinclair, Mikey Johnston, James Forrest, and Ewan Henderson all failed to inspire.

Edouard, meanwhile, failed to get any clear cut chances outside of one in the second-half that forced a fine stop by Joe Lewis. That all came from his own making, however, and nothing to do with the formation.

But for long spells, the big Frenchman just looked isolated. It’s not the first time that’s happened with Eddy either. At Easter Road just over a week ago, he had the same problem with a lack of service from the likes of Sinclair and Forrest.

Celtic simply need to get their French forward on the ball more. The best way to do that now is to throw Weah up alongside him.

Close friends

The two were team-mates at PSG, and Weah has revealed in the past how much he would love to play alongside his friend.

Weah came on for the final 12 minutes or so against Aberdeen, which was nowhere near enough time to impress. He saw the ball on a couple of occasions, but he created nothing of note.

For games against teams that sit so deep, we need to try something else. Two up front falls into that category of the untested.

Added to that, Weah hasn’t played anywhere near enough since he joined from PSG. He’s made just two starts since January, and that can’t have been the plan when we first signed him.

It’s time to give him a shot alongside Edouard. It’s a combination that’s crying out for a shot, and Celtic have yet to give it a go under Brendan Rodgers or Lennon.

Surely, after the stale performance on Saturday, it’s time to give it a shot.
