Timothy Weah has a big decision to make if Celtic beat Aberdeen

Celtic are in for a club vs country battle with the USA regarding Timothy Weah, so long as they beat Aberdeen on Sunday.

The Hoops face Derek McInnes’ Dons side for a place in May’s Scottish Cup final this Sunday. Hearts or Inverness Caledonian Thistle will be the opposition for whoever wins, with that match taking place on Saturday.

But, unfortunately for the Hoops, Weah could be taking part in the USA under-20 World Cup this summer. The tournament will start in May, with USA’s first game taking place on May 24th against Ukraine.

The Americans will also face Nigeria and Qatar in the group stages. According to the Herald, however, the USA will have a 10-day training camp before the tournament.

Therefore, that would mean that the 10-day camp would start on the 14th May. The Scottish Cup final this year, meanwhile, takes place on May 25th. Ultimately, Weah would be away with the USA should he make that decision.

It’s difficult to see him missing out on such a grand stage such as the under-20 World Cup. Representing his country will likely mean a lot to him. And, disappointingly for Celtic, there wouldn’t be anything we could do to halt it.

Tom Rogic mark two

It’s reminiscent of the Tom Rogic saga in December. Celtic wanted Rogic to stay in Scotland and face Rangers BEFORE heading out with Australia for the Asian Cup. In the end, the Aussies rejected it and Celtic lost the derby 1-0, missing Rogic’s creativity.

The final of the under-20s World Cup this summer is on the 15th June. If Celtic get Weah back on-loan next season, he would be back in time for the first qualifier of the Champions League, which is later that month.

But this is a big blow. Should Celtic have to face Hearts in the final if both sides progress, Weah certainly could be needed. Regardless, the Hoops must have confidence they can see the game through without the PSG wonder-kid.

It’ll be unfortunate for him to miss such an iconic day if he does go away. The treble treble is a unique achievement in Scottish football history, and a day Weah likely would’ve loved to have been involved in.

But given the fact he was called up last month to the USA under-20 side, it’s clear he’s highly regarded and in contention for selection this summer.

Celtic, however, have a job to do on Sunday, and can’t look too far beyond that for now.
