Timothy Weah wants to play for Celtic in the Scottish Cup final

Timothy Weah’s Scottish Cup final availability remains in doubt, but the Celtic star has stated he wants to play in it.

Weah has only made four starts for Celtic since arriving on loan from PSG in January. He’s made 17 appearances for the Hoops overall, and has four goals to his name.

Question marks hover over whether he’ll be able to play against Hearts in the May 25th showpiece at Hampden. Celtic could be without him due to the under-20 World Cup taking place this month. The opening game of the USA’s campaign kicks off one day before the Scottish Cup final.

But Weah continues not to be shy when it comes to talking about the Hampden blockbuster. Speaking in the Celtic View (Volume 54, Issue 41, Page 21), the striker stated he wants to play a part in all of Celtic’s final games.

“Hopefully in training I can show the manager that I can start in the remaining games.

“We have Rangers and two games against Hearts. They’re all huge games and I want to be a part of them, hopefully get some goals and a first goal against Rangers.

“Whatever I get, I’ll be happy. The boys have been amazing, we’ve done well so far and we’re focused on finishing the season strong.”

Decision rests with the USA

This is positive from our perspective. It’s great to see Weah talking about potentially making the Scottish Cup final. He hasn’t looked to dismiss that game whenever he’s spoken about our run-in.

The USA will announce their squad for the under-20 World Cup tomorrow. It’s going to be an interesting selection, but Weah must be a sure-favourite to be in the squad. He took part in under-20 matches back in March, and the prospect of a World Cup surely wouldn’t see him left out.

And that’s where the frustration is for Celtic. There’s absolutely nothing we can do about the USA demanding Weah goes to the World Cup. He may want to play in the cup final, but it’s unlikely he would pull out of international duty for it.

There is a glimmer of hope in the CONCACAF Gold Cup being competed for by the senior side. USA kick-off their campaign on June 19th against Guyana. Therefore, there is still the chance that eight-time capped Weah could perhaps be brought up for that squad instead – thus freeing him to take part against Hearts in the final.

Weah clearly wants to be there to face the Jambos, and he would be a welcome addition for the team. But the decision will be made tomorrow, and here’s hoping it’s a good one.
