Timothy Weah wants to stay at Celtic for Scottish Cup final

Celtic’s on-loan PSG forward Timothy Weah has admitted that he would risk missing the start of the under-20 World Cup for the Scottish Cup final.

Celtic meet Hearts on May 25th at Hampden. Unfortunately for Weah, however, this comes right in the middle of the under-20 World Cup group stage.

The USA have qualified for the competition. Their first game kicks off against Ukraine on May 24th – one day before the Scottish Cup final. It’s highly unlikely Weah could be available for the second matchday either on May 27th if he was to feature at Hampden.

But the PSG youngster is still hopeful a resolution to the problem can be sorted. Weah, speaking in the Daily Record, claimed that he would like to stick around and see through the treble treble.

“Hopefully I’ll be here for the final because I have the World Cup coming up and we have to discuss that with the clubs and the national team. I didn’t know about it (the dates clash) until I saw it in the media – I don’t know what’s going on. I guess the club has to discuss with the national team.

“I’d love to play in in the cup final but it’s a World Cup as well. It’s up to the club and the national team to discuss on which one is better.

“It’s going to be my first Scottish Cup final so it would be good to be a part of that.”

Keeping Weah ideal, but is it essential?

This just doesn’t seem like a battle Celtic would be able to win.

The USA surely wouldn’t want to have Weah missing for two of three group stage matches. Without his influence, they could be out of the tournament before the youngster even turns up in Poland.

Discussions haven’t yet been revealed between club and country. But it’s difficult to see anything other than a stubborn approach from the Americans. Weah’s preference may not mean much.

We would all be kidding ourselves on if we said that we NEEDED Weah for the cup final in all fairness. Celtic have been beating Hearts long before the striker arrived at the club, and we’ll continue to do so long after he departs. The likes of Odsonne Edouard, James Forrest, and Tom Rogic are more essential in terms of team selection.

But having Weah available would also be a handy tool to have from the bench. His pace and directness has proven to be a problem for Scottish defences this season, and Hearts would be no different.

Hopefully something can be sorted out, but the USA will surely want their man for the start of the Under-20 World Cup.
