Timothy Weath played just as much under Lennon as he did Rodgers

Timothy Weah confirmed that he had left Celtic on Friday, after his loan deal was cut short. The teenager took to his favourite social media platform – Instagram – to speak directly to Hoops fans.

“The gaffer told me it is in the best interest of the team that I collect my things and go home,” he told his followers.

The Herald reported that Weah had refused to play in this month’s Scottish Cup final after being selected for his country America at the under-20 World Cup. Celtic and the US team has apparently sorted out a compromise that would suit both parties. The 19-year-old then reportedly pulled the plug.

Harsh on Lennon

Neil Lennon has been widely criticised for not letting the American see out his deal at the club. He has also been forced to take the blame for the winger’s deal not working out. Lennon is accused of stifling the youngster’s development after he’d made a positive start under Brendan Rodgers. The reality of the situation is very different.

Weah was available for the same number of games (11) for both Rodgers and Lennon. He made four starts in total during his time at Celtic – two for each manager. The winger came off the bench 13 times – 7 for Rodgers and 6 for Lennon – while he was unused in five matches.

The PSG man played a total of 532 minutes for Celtic with just 305 of them coming under Rodgers (57%).

It therefore seems a bit ludicrous for fans to blame Lennon solely for the failed loan spell. Weah wasn’t ever given a proper opportunity by either manager to make his mark on the first team. When he played he looked lively, and netted once every 133 minutes.

We’ll just need to hope that this episode hasn’t damaged our positive reputation with PSG.
