Tom Rogic is set for a hectic summer with Australia, his national manager has confirmed.
Socceroos boss Graham Arnold has revealed that Rogic will be part of the Australia team who take part in next summer’s Copa America in Argentina and Colombia. The tournament runs all the way until the middle of July with Rogic expected to join back up with Celtic following the end of Australia’s involvement.
The 26-year-old will also play some World Cup qualifiers in early June in what is shaping up to be a non-stop summer. He will, however, be afforded next month’s break off to get married.
Arnold told the Daily Record: “I’ve had regular discussions with Tom since he had what was a season of injuries last year and he’s only just now coming back and building himself up slowly for what will be a big year ahead.
“Instead of linking up with us, he will use this break to get married.
“He’ll pretty much go straight back into pre-season training with Celtic from the Copa America, so we agreed he will get married in this window, given we didn’t expect him to be fully fit.”
Travelling to Australia must be taking it out of Rogic
The whole Tom Rogic international situation is very frustrating to the Celtic support, and was to previous manager Brendan Rodgers. The Northern Irishman duelled with Arnold just last year when the Socceroos forced Rogic to miss a crucial derby match against Rangers.
The attacker isn’t the fittest player at the best of times but his energy is further sapped when he has to travel to length of the globe to play his international football. Rogic often arrives back in Scotland just 24 hours before a competitive Celtic match, and has to sit out as a result.
The fact that Rogic is effectively going to get no break next summer isn’t good. But there’s not really much of a way round it for Celtic. It’s just one of those things you have to put up with when you have a player from the other side of the world.
