Celtic supporters are well-known travellers when it comes to following the first-team.
From up and down Scotland to across Europe, where Neil Lennon’s team go, thousands of fans will surely be in tow.
Now, a Scottish Premiership club are looking to cash in on that passion by handing a massive three stands to the Hoops next time we visit at the end of the month.
St Johnstone will hand over three-quarters of McDiarmid Park to the Celtic faithful on January 29th and manager Tommy Wright has admitted he’s hoping it gives his club a significant cash advantage over others.
He’s also defended against critics of the move.
As quoted by The Scottish Sun, he said: “The club’s been considering it for the last couple of seasons and were probably close to doing it before now.
“Hopefully the financial benefit can give us a bit of an advantage over teams around us. I think the vast majority of our fans can see that.
“You have people being dramatic and saying we have sold our soul, but I think that’s mainly fans of other clubs.
“The feedback I’ve had from our supporters is that they’re in favour of this because they see it as a sensible, pragmatic decision.”
Title race set to be blockbuster
As the trophy chase heats up in the second half of the season, there could be unprecedented demand from supporters who will be desperate to see Celtic clinch a historic ninth title in a row at Rangers’ expense.
We’re being pushed close this season by Steven Gerrard’s outfit and it makes every match a must-win encounter and every away day a huge event.
Clubs looking to maximise their earnings from that interest makes perfect sense to me. It’s not as if St Johnstone are famous for having a massive home support anyway. Nobody is really being put out here.
Anything that helps more Celtic fans see the team in action is a winner in my book.
