Consider this a friendly reminder that this evening’s Celtic vs Motherwell match kicks off at 6:15pm, far earlier than the more traditional 7:45pm or 8pm timeslots.
But why? Put simply, it’s because of Premier Sports’ live TV coverage, despite both clubs seeking to kick off at another hour to benefit their supporters.
That situation was referenced by Motherwell chief executive Alan Burrows last month when the game’s date and time was announced, much to the frustration of fans.
He said on Twitter: “Both Motherwell FC & Celtic FC raised concerns around the kick-off time based on the difficulties it will present to supporters wishing to attend the match. We asked the broadcaster to consider having the two live matches, scheduled for that day, run simultaneously on different channels.
“However, we have been informed that this is not possible due to other contractual commitments and no other arrangements are possible.
“Whilst we an extremely keen to work with our broadcast partners and commercial sponsors to ensure they get maximum value for their investment in Scottish football, it’s a far from ideal scenario for fans of both clubs. We have been reassured that the circumstances surrounding this particular scheduling are extremely rare and unlikely to happen again.”
Rangers’ match against Dundee is also live on Premier Sports 1, kicking off at 8:15pm, and everyone will be hoping that there is no draw in Motherwell for a variety of reasons.
Should it go to extra time, there will be a scheduling conflict, meaning that coverage of the Celtic match against the Steelmen will be moved to the Free Sports channel.
Premier Sports say this will be fully explained to viewers should the scenario occur, but it’s still far from ideal, and it’s unfortunate another solution couldn’t be found here.
Of course, we’ll be hoping that Celtic pick up in the win, and in the 90 minutes!
