Tony Docherty shares what he told the Dundee dressing room about Luke McCowan’s move to Celtic

Celtic’s late move for Luke McCowan on transfer deadline day concluded Brendan Rodger’s summer business to strengthen the team ahead of the new season.

The former Dundee man was Rodgers’ seventh summer signing and was immediately pitched into the Glasgow Derby win against Rangers at Celtic Park.

For Celtic, the capture of Luke McCowan does seem like a shrew piece of business. But for Dundee, they will be gutted to lose one of their best players and their captain.

But it seems that Dundee boss, Tony Docherty, has taken an alternative view on the move and it’s a view that he reveals was used for an inspirational team talk before their 2-2 draw with St Mirren last weekend.

Docherty’s ‘satisfaction’ over McCowan’s Celtic move

As Dundee prepares for life without McCowan, Docherty said that his team should feel proud of the part they played in helping their former skipper get the biggest move his career.

Docherty told the Daily Record, “That was part of the team talk last Saturday. I told them they all played a part in getting him there.

“It should be rewarding for all of us when a player goes on because he’s done what he’s done with you successfully.

“He’s moved on to bigger things and that’s what you’re in it for – to develop and improve players.

“When that happens you can take a deal of satisfaction but all the credit goes to Luke and his team-mates.”

Luke McCowan’s bright Celtic future

Things are already looking up for McCowan at Celtic after the Scot was named in Brendan Rodgers’ finalised Champions League squad.

If McCowan continues to show what he did against Rangers then the 26-year-old could prove to be a valuable addition to the Celtic squad.

It’s still early days yet in his Celtic career but McCowan will take great confidence from that performance and will hope to kick on.

Next up for Celtic it’s Hearts in the Scottish Premiership where, should Rangers drop any points at Tannadice in their 12pm kick-off, Rodgers could very well stretch his lead at the top of the table and pile more pressure on the Ibrox club.
