Tosh McKinlay opens up on famous training ground bust-up with Celtic hero Henrik Larsson

Henrik Larsson will always be remembered as one of the greatest strikers in Celtic’s history.

The iconic Swedish striker scored 242 goals in 315 appearances as Larsson wrote his name in Celtic folklore over his seven-year spell at the club.

Larsson’s goals helped Celtic to a treble, the 2003 UEFA Cup final and to many victories over Rangers, including the famous 6-2 derby win in September 2000.

But just as famous as his goal tally, Larsson’s training ground bust-up with Tosh McKinlay also hit the headlines and here, the former Celtic full-back opens up on what really happened on that afternoon in 1997.

Tosh McKinlay ‘had to apologise’ to Celtic icon Henrik Larsson

McKinlay was also a good servant for Celtic and was instrumental in helping end the Parkhead club’s six-year trophy drought in the 90s providing the assist to win the Scottish Cup in 1995.

And here, the ex-Celtic defender opens up on the training ground spat with Larsson during the season that the Hoops stopped Rangers winning ten-in-a-row.

McKinlay told the Let’s Be Frank Podcast [27m], “Everything was going on [at training]. People were leaving their foot in. There was bits and bobs and I’m thinking, ‘I’m keeping out of the road of this.

“So at the end, we always used to have a wee five-a-side. I’ve kind of tugged his jersey and he’s kind of swung around, missed me and then the red mist came down and then that’s it.

“It was just one of the things, you know.

“And there was a two weeks suspension and then I get back in. I had to apologise, which I was going to do anyway.

“So, as I say, he ends up the King of Kings and the top man, you know. He was a fantastic player.”

As well as scoring 242 goals, Larsson picked up a multitude of honours during his time at Celtic.

Larsson also famously won the European Golden Boot in 2001 as well as the Player of the Year and was Scotland’s Top Goal scorer in five seasons out of seven.
