A Rangers supporter has started a petition to have Neil Doncaster removed as SPFL Chief Executive after a week of drama in Scottish football, The Daily Record report.
Our Ibrox rivals aren’t coping well with the concept of Celtic being named nine-in-a-row champions this season, after ten clubs in the Scottish Premiership voted to end the current campaign on an average points basis if action can’t resume this summer.
The SPFL’s proposals in general though have yet to be confirmed, with drama revolving around Dundee’s vote that still hasn’t been officially recorded.
Now, Rangers are going after SPFL chief Doncaster, with the Ibrox club calling for his suspension in an explosive statement on Saturday afternoon.
Their fanbase is now even more riled up. A petition has been started to oust Doncaster from his position, a sign that the toys are well truly of the pram in Govan.
Over 5,000 people are said to have put their name to it already.
SPFL chairman Murdoch MacLennan has now said the league’s board will meet this week to discuss the latest accusations and developments, though offered a stern reply to the Ibrox club to put up or shut up.
As quoted by The Record, MacLennan said: “It is extremely concerning that Rangers have chosen to make a number of very serious allegations against the SPFL, its corporate governance, its culture, its office-bearers and its business operations.
“In the often-heated atmosphere of Scottish football, rumour and misinformation can very quickly reach fever-point.
“However, allegations of a lack of even-handedness and fair play go to the very integrity of the league and I would expect Rangers Interim Chairman Douglas Park to present compelling evidence to back up his claims, or to withdraw them.”
None of what’s happened this weekend has been constructive for Scottish football, with clubs needing to now pull together rather than throw accusations around.
Solutions are needed, not recriminations, and hopefully there’s a strong dose of common sense applied to the decision-makers at every club over the coming days.
With the vast majority of clubs in the country voting for the proposals as is, hopefully we aren’t too far away from a conclusion.
