A bit of light-hearted entertainment during the international break emerged for Celtic fans this afternoon as UEFA put out a class tweet of Jota rinsing Jeremie Frimpong.
The pair came up against each other at Celtic Park a fortnight ago as the Hoops lost 4-0 to Bayer Leverkusen. It was certainly a chastening night, but despite the result, Celtic still created a truckload of chances that should’ve been buried.
The movement of Kyogo Furuhashi caused Leverkusen problems all evening. And it’s fair to say Frimpong didn’t have the most convincing of games against on-loan Benfica talent Jota either. The Portuguese winger showed all of his tricks and flicks to help create several openings from the left flank.
Most memorable was the first half moment in which Jota used his quick feet to put both Frimpong and Kerem Demirbay on their backsides. He then put in a fine cross that nobody was there to get on the end of.
There weren’t many enjoyable moments on the night. But that was certainly one of them.
UEFA acknowledge Jota class against Bayer Leverkusen despite result
Despite the result, there wasn’t a feeling of total despondency after it. Creating the chances we did against Bayer was a positive sign. Even if we were naive at the back, it was confirmation that we can hurt some of the top sides in the Europa League.
Jota’s love affair with the Celtic support continued days later of course. His late winner at Aberdeen ingratiated himself with the support even further. No wonder either given the importance of it as he starts to become a big-game player for the Bhoys.
Celtic can breathe easy knowing that Jota was one of the players not in international action this week. That means he should be fully fit and firing for the trip to Motherwell on Saturday before Ferencvaros visit Parkhead three days later.
And fingers crossed we’ll be able to see more the magic he produced against Frimpong, only with a better end result come the full-time whistle.
