The furore over the decision to award Rangers a penalty in the 3-3 draw with Celtic is likely to continue for the rest of this week.
John Beaton brandished a yellow card to Fabio Silva for simulation but after an intervention from VAR, the SFA-appointed whistler overturned his original decision to award the spot kick that caused a sea-change in the game.
James Tavernier converted the penalty and then we all know what happened next. However, there has been serious debate on whether or not the U-turn by Beaton was correct.
Sky Sports’ Dermot Gallagher believed the award was correct whilst former SFA Grade 1 referee, Steve Conroy, thought Beaton was wrong to overturn the decision.
So if two former professional referees can’t agree on this, how do you determine if the decision was correct or not?
What Peter Grant saw the Rangers fans do at Celtic penalty award is telling
Now we all know that the Rangers fans shout for any and all contact that goes on inside their opponents’ penalty box.
The Ibrox crowd, like every other support I suppose, are eagle-eyed whenever they think they’ve spotted an infringement of some sort if it means they can scream for a spot-kick.
But what they did when Fabio Silvo hit the deck is very telling and could indicate that Beaton’s original decision of diving should have stood. Peter Grant explains.
Grant said [The Sun], “Alistair Johnston had been booked in the first half for a challenge on someone who kept diving, which really was embarrassing. But it meant he had to be really careful.

“I actually saw some Rangers fans right behind the penalty incident having a go at Fabio Silva for diving.
“They were shouting at him to get up. It was unbelievable.”
The disappointing thing is that nothing can be done about it now. The game is over and the three points that Celtic looked on course to claim ended up as just one.
But the positive we can all take is that the title race is still firmly in our hands.
All Brendan Rodgers needs to do is win his six remaining Scottish Premiership games and the SPFL trophy stays in the Parkhead boardroom.
