Greg Taylor is one of the few players expected to keep his place in the Celtic squad for next season.
Following initial critique, the 23-year-old has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing campaign at Parkhead.
Finally gaining a consistent run of fixtures, the former Kilmarnock-man has been able to demonstrate his capability to improve week on week.
Set to stay on at the club, he may provide some continuity and experience looking ahead to the new era.
He was criticised heavily at the start of 2020/21; despite being played out of position at wing-back under Neil Lennon.
On reflection, the Scotland international has registered a respectable seven assists coupled with a solitary goal this campaign from 26 appearances [Transfermarkt].
Greg Taylor ball-usage more effective than Celtic rival Diego Laxalt’s this season
Diego Laxalt is perhaps the more fashionable choice on the left-hand side for the Hoops. In particular, the Uruguayan impressed in the Glasgow Derby stalemate last week with his energetic nature and driving runs. However, Taylor has played slightly more games than Laxalt the last year and numerically edges out his positional counterpart in important areas. The loanee has only managed one goal and no assists thus far upon review [Transfermarkt].
With regard to passing statistics, Taylor has an average of 1.5 key passes per game in contrast to only 0.6 from Laxalt. In short, the Scot contributes more efficiently to the Celts attacking build-up play.
As well as this, he also has a higher output in terms of his pass success ratio. He has notably accumulated 78.9% in comparison to Laxalt’s 76.6% tally further indicating his quality on the ball.
None of these points of discussion are a slight on the evidently talented Laxalt. Rather, an encouraging sign of Taylor’s continuous development over time.
Under the correct coaching instructions, he could become a really influential player at Parkhead for years to come.
In other news, a £1.5m defender has hinted he’s ready for his Celtic opportunity next season.
