Venezia claim Thomas Henry rejected Celtic move
Venezia have stated that new signing Thomas Henry rejected the opportunity to join Celtic over them.
The Serie A club completed the signing of the Frenchman earlier this week as the Hoops continue to search for a potential Odsonne Edouard replacement.
Henry was reportedly Ange Postecoglou’s first choice to replace his current number one striker this summer [Scottish Sun]. However, it had also been reported that the move for Henry was dependent on Celtic selling Edouard first and foremost [Het Nieuwsblad].
Despite that, Venezia are claiming that Henry rejected the chance to join Celtic, with the player himself explaining why he wanted to join his new side.
As quoted by Tuttomercatoweb, technical director Paolo Poggi said: “To bring Thomas to Venice we made an important offer, beyond the economic aspect we have shown confidence in the player by expressing our project and we are satisfied that he has chosen us among many important clubs too, as for example Celtic.”
Henry said the following when discussing why he joined Venezia: “Many teams were looking for me this summer, but it was easy to make this decision. I decided calmly because I understood that the club and the coach believed in me and I believe this is the best choice. To play in such a stimulating and important league. it’s important for my career and playing against teams like Inter and Juve is very stimulating.” [Tuttomercatoweb].
Nothing to suggest Celtic had made move for Venezia striker Thomas Henry
It’s interesting to hear the club’s technical director state that he turned down Celtic. From the outside, it didn’t appear as though the Hoops had actually made an offer for the player.
If it was dependent on the sale of Edouard then surely no offer was present. After all, even now it’s still unclear as to whether the Frenchman will be leaving the club this summer.
Henry is certainly a talent as he showed for Gent last season. It’s disappointing that Celtic haven’t made a move, especially if he truly was Postecoglou’s number one target for a replacement.
But reports of Celtic’s pursuit of Georgios Giakoumakis were doing the rounds long before Henry officially moved to Venezia. There was an opportunity there for Celtic to interject and it doesn’t appear to have been taken.
It’s easy to then say that Henry has simply rejected all of the clubs he’s been linked with. We have to understand who actually made him an offer first and foremost.
Regardless, Celtic have clearly moved on. Fans will now be hoping a deal for Giakoumakis can get over the line before the transfer deadline.
