Celtic midfielder Matt O’Riley has done his chances of a late push into the Denmark World Cup squad no harm at all with a goal on duty for their U21s side tonight.

The English-born talent has made a positive impression on the Danish set-up over the last few weeks and is signing off tonight with his biggest impact yet.

He netted a classy volley from just inside the edge of the 18-yard area, to bring the Danes back from a 1-0 deficit at home to Turkey. You can see a video of the goal via A Spor at this link, or embedded below.

At the time of publishing, approaching half-time, it remains 1-1.

O’Riley also started matches against Kazakhstan and Scotland during this window, registering an assist within 60 seconds of his first-ever start for his nation.

The Celtic midfielder recently held talks with the manager of the senior Danish team, Kasper Hjulmand, and his future with them sounds positive.

As quoted by Bold.dk, he said: “Yes, I did [meet Hjulmand]. He came over to me and told me he was happy to see me. He also praised me for my game. That was nice to hear, because it’s the Danish national coach you hear it from.

“Of course, I wanted to show myself off to him, because I have a goal of being selected for the national team and going to the World Cup. That was my goal when I was first selected for the U21s, and it still is.

“No, he didn’t! [guarantee him a World Cup spot]. He did say that it was good to see me playing at that level as I was playing well with good players.”

It remains to be seen whether he can attain that goal but, as mentioned, tonight is good progress towards making it happen.

Also crucial will be O’Riley’s early-season Celtic form. If he can shine from the start for Ange Postecoglou’s Bhoys, while performing in the UEFA Champions League, he has every chance of going to Qatar.

He’s playing a patient, committed long game with Denmark and I have a funny feeling it’s all going to pay off in time. If not for this major tournament, then certainly the next one.

Well done tonight Matt!
