Tributes have poured out for John Robertson since his sad passing on Christmas Day.

A two-time European Cup winner with Nottingham Forest, Robertson went on to assist his ex-teammate Martin O’Neill at Celtic.

Despite growing up supporting Rangers, he described his Celtic Park days as his best years in football. He assisted O’Neill for the entirety of his initial five years in Glasgow.

As a player, he was a 28-time Scotland international. A direct winger, Brian Clough described him as his favourite player.

Like a certain other gifted winger, Robertson was born and raised in Viewpark, where he is now being honoured.

View park was, of course, also home to the great Jimmy Johnstone, Celtic’s greatest ever player.

The Lanarkshire town is rightly proud to have been home to two world class European champions.

So it is now commemorating Robertson by naming a street after him – John Robertson Way will be created on part of a new estate being built on what was previously known as Texaco park.

The gesture comes after the football committee who look after Johnstone’s memorial garden in the town discussed a commemoration with North Lanarkshire Council.

Labour councillor Helen Loughran agreed, and Robertson’s life and career will be honoured in the area, The Athletic report.

Robertson is also being honoured by a stand being named after him at the City Ground, saying everything about how he is remembered in Nottingham.

Robertson and Johnstone aren’t alone in representing the town of Viewpark – ex-Celtic hero Johnny Doyle, former Scotland international Iain Munro and former Arsenal winger Tommy Coakley all hail from the town.

Martin O’Neill is still unbeaten domestically as Celtic manager across these two spells this season

Speaking after the sad passing of his old dugout pal, O’Neil discussed what Robertson would think of his decision to return to Celtic.

He said: “He really was special, you know, honestly. And, yes, a special character.

“A third time? He’d have thought that was laughable. He would honestly. He would have been like ‘You’re not wise Martin’.”

On the last time he spoke to Robertson, O’Neill said: “It would have been some months ago.

“And, yes, I spoke to him well aware, absolutely. John would get embarrassed with that there, the fact that he wasn’t able to speak to you properly.

“So he would be there and maybe he didn’t want you to come up and see him in that shape. But,  yes, he was, honestly, a special boy.

“A special player, you know, a special player of which I was obviously very jealous — because he got all the accolades, quite rightly so.”
