Watch: Class footage of Celtic-linked Matt O'Riley emerges; brilliant passing range on show
A brilliant highlights package of reported Celtic target Matt O’Riley has emerged this afternoon after the player’s link to Parkhead.
O’Riley is said to be undergoing a medical in Glasgow today ahead of a move that will hopefully be announced in the coming days [Daily Record]. The move comes after a failed bid to land Australia international Riley McGree last week.
Celtic fans will know not to have this was down as a done-deal until the official announcement is made. But as we continue to learn more about his attributes, class footage has come to the fore on social media showing some of his highlights with MK Dons. You can take a look at it below:
It’s clear to see that O’Riley’s main attribute here appears to be his passing range. There are several brilliant switches of play with the midfielder clearly comfortable playing long diagonals and taking risks.
Another clear aspect to his game is the physical presence he has. A style of play that, at first glance, looks a touch similar to the Tom Rogic style. Granted, there’s still plenty more we’ll all learn about him if he signs for the Hoops.
But from the clip above, it’s clear he has some potential in his locker at only 21 years of age.
Matt O’Riley to Celtic looks close to completion
Reports believe that this one could be done in time for Celtic’s Scottish Cup clash at Alloa on Saturday evening. It remains to be seen if that’s the case, and we certainly don’t want to get ahead of ourselves after the McGree saga last week.
However, given O’Riley’s position – a central midfielder – it’s clear Ange wants another of those in the door. When you consider he plays in the same area of the pitch as McGree, it’s something Postecoglou appears to be prioritising.
It’s also worth mentioning that Ange never flat out ruled any more signings. He did state that if something came up then the Hoops would look at it, but it’s clear they were not in that position last week [Sky Sports]. Evidently, this is one that’s progressed quickly.
There’s a debate to be had again over who drops out for him. There’s a plethora of talent in that Celtic midfield now, especially with the additions of Reo Hatate and Yosuke Ideguchi respectively. With David Turnbull also still to return, O’Riley would have a fight on his hands for regular minutes.
But this also looks like a potential signing that would be made for the here and now. At 21, O’Riley has had regular first-team experience with MK Dons and also broke through at Fulham too.
For now, we all just hope it gets done and Ange fills that midfield void he clearly believes he’s got.
