Martin O’Neill’s return to Celtic could very well save the club’s season.

Wilfried Nancy’s Celtic tenure ended after the Frenchman blew a big lead to Rangers in the league and allowed Hearts to open up a six-point gap at the top of the Scottish Premiership table.

To try and salvage what is left of the season, Celtic asked Martin O’Neill to return one more time to help steady the ship in Paradise.

O’Neill told Celtic shareholder Dermot Desmond yes, and the immediate change in optimism online was abundantly clear.

And what those fans did epitomised how every Celtic supporter felt as soon as they found out O’Neill was returning as the Hoops gaffer.

Celtic fans sing Martin O’Neill’s name as Hoops return is confirmed

Celtic fans loved seeing O’Neill return to the dugout earlier this season as he oversaw big wins against Feyenoord and Rangers.

And now set to take his place as the boss again, Celtic fans at a private supporters function showed O’Neill some love as they welcomed him to the stage.

The optimism, joy and expectation that had been drained from Celtic supporters immediately returned, as fans chanted Martin O’Neill’s name.

Celtic’s chances of winning the Scottish Premiership – our view

Celtic could be seen as title challengers again now that O’Neill has returned to the club.

The Hoops boss closed an eight-point gap to Hearts before Nancy’s reign and O’Neill could easily do this again with the players he has at his disposal.

If O’Neill can get the Celtic players in a functioning and effective system, the Bhoys are still the best team in the league.

With just six points separating Celtic from Hearts and with the Tynecastle club up at the end of January, the Bhoys’ chances of winning the league have increased significantly now that O’Neill is back in charge.
