Tony Watt finally looks like making a club stick after the former Celtic youngster signed a contract extension with Motherwell yesterday.

The ex-Parkhead striker, known for his iconic winner against Barcelona in the Champions League back in 2012, has failed to settle since leaving Glasgow in 2014.

Watt has had spells with Standard Liege, Charlton Athletic, Cardiff City, Blackburn Rovers, Hearts, OH Leuven, St Johnstone, and CSKA Sofia ever since he said goodbye to Parkhead permanently. That’s eight different clubs in only six years.

He signed for his ninth in Motherwell back in February 2020 as he returned to his hometown, and it appears he’s finally going to make this one last. Watt signed a new two-year contract with the Steelmen yesterday, and was clearly pleased to get the deal done.

Speaking to Motherwell’s official club website, Watt said: “I’m delighted to have signed another deal.

“The club have been great with me and I was really keen to stay longer. I’m settled and I feel like I am getting better and better here. It’s home – and I’m ready to kick on even more.”

Watt has plenty of years left to leave a mark on Scottish football

It feels like Watt has been around forever since he burst onto the scene under Neil Lennon back in that famous 2012-13 season. However, the reality is that he’s only 26 years of age.

What that means is that the striker has plenty of years left to make his mark on the Scottish game before he calls it a day. Watt isn’t even into his peak years, and he’ll be looking to finally show why so many had high hopes for him during his Parkhead days.

As for how far Watt can go, there has to be a sense of realism. As well as he’s performing at Fir Park, it’s not eye-catching form that will have clubs lining up looking to buy him. The striker has only netted three goals in 15 Premiership appearances, but his tenure back in North Lanarkshire has been more about falling back in love with the game.

The Celtic-supporting frontman has simply needed a club to put their faith in him and try to get first-team minutes back into him. A return to his hometown appears to have worked wonders for Watt, and he’s clearly impressed enough to be offered an extended stay.

All eyes will be on how he kicks on from this as he tries to make an impact back in his homeland. Watt deserves some stability, and fair play to Motherwell for providing it. Hopefully, he can go from strength to strength ahead of his peak years.
