Former Celtic captain Scott Brown has paid tribute to ex-Hoops teammate Mikael Lustig after he officially retired on Sunday evening.
The right-back played his final professional game at the weekend for AIK Stockholm in his homeland, which unfortunately ended in a 1-0 defeat against Elfsborg.
Despite the disappointment of the loss, it was a moment of celebration for Lustig, who brought his incredibly successful career to an end.
Tributes were on show for the defender on Sunday night, with his final club in Sweden holding a presentation after his last match to celebrate his career.
Of course, Celtic fans will be well aware that arguably the best spell in Lustig’s career came at Parkhead, where he lifted eight Scottish Premiership titles, four Scottish Cups and four Scottish League cups.
The club also paid their own tribute to the full-back, releasing a brief interview with Lustig and posting a video of some of his best moments in the green and white Hoops.
There were many brilliant moments that Lustig created during his time in Glasgow, and along the way, the Swedish international also created some close bonds.
But, there was no better bond for the defender at Celtic Park than with club captain and icon Scott Brown, who he helped lift many trophies across his eight-year stay.
Taking to Instagram, the former Celtic midfielder and current Fleetwood Town boss paid his own tribute to Lustig, sending a classy message that the Hoops support would all love.
He said: “@mikaellustig, your the one🎼💚Happy retirement, my friend. What a legend you are and a true friend. Wish you all the luck in the future 🥰”
Both men had a huge part to play in one of the club’s most successful modern-day periods. So, it is fitting to remember that Lustig’s final moment as a Celtic player was lifting the 2018/19 Scottish Cup alongside the Hoops captain.
However, the incredibly popular duo have now moved on to the next stage of their careers, with Brown retiring earlier this year and Lustig joining him at the end of 2022.
It is certainly a somewhat emotional moment seeing two club heroes bringing their successful careers to an end. But, at the same time, it has allowed us to celebrate their very best moments.
I am sure we will see both Brown and Lustig reunited at some point in the near future, and potentially they could make the visit to Parkhead to take in the new era under Ange Postecoglou.
