Celtic’s 4-1 friendly defeat to Sporting CP will be forgotten in days. What won’t be is the message that some fans in Portugal sent to the board.

New Celtic signing Camilo Duran impressed as he grabbed his first goal to draw the game level. But when supporters began chanting “Sack the board” after Sporting opened the scoring, the people running Celtic should have been listening..

This wasn’t about Celtic fans reacting to a lacklustre display by the team, and the board know it.

Celtic fans have sent the board a transfer warning

Celtic supporters have been sitting patiently waiting on the board to deliver signings to help strengthen Martin O’Neill’s squad for next season.

So far, Camilo Duran is the only new name to enter Celtic Park this summer as the board sit with over £70m in the bank.

For context, Celtic have released more Adidas merchandise this summer than signed players, so it is no surprise rage is building in some sections of the support.

But the fans who chanted in Portugal are not keyboard warriors. They paid good money to watch a nothing game and they clearly didn’t like what they were seeing served up.

Celtic can still change the mood

Camilo Duran gave Celtic fans something to smile about last night. The Colombian impressed with his goal and made a nuisance of himself as he annoyed the Sporting CP back line.

If Celtic can serve up more players like this in the summer, that will relieve some pressure on the board.

Until that happens, Michael Nicholson, Dermot Desmond and Brian Wilson had better strap themselves in, because home games against Middlesbrough and AC Milan are coming up and the message sent then could be far worse if no new players are signed.
