Celtic always love shooting themselves in the foot.

Even with Martin O’Neill papering over the cracks of the recent campaign by winning the domestic double, the powers that be still have to make things difficult for themselves.

Many have been wondering why there is a delay in appointing O’Neill as manager for next season; it has been well documented that he will remain in charge.

Well, news dropped on Thursday that there is a delay in proceedings because O’Neill’s backroom staff – Shaun Maloney and Mark Fotheringham – have been offered substantial wage cuts.

Not long after those rumours started to swirl, Celtic posted about their World Cup stars on social media, and it was met with a wave and barrage of verbal anger from the fans.

Celtic post about 2026 World Cup stars during Martin O’Neill delay

Celtic have eight players representing them at the 2026 World Cup, including Scotland duo Kieran Tierney and Anthony Ralston.

The tournament, which is being co-hosted by the United States of America, Canada and Mexico, kicks off on June 11.

The Hoops’ social media account wanted to wish their players ‘good luck’, with Tierney, Ralston, Daizen Maeda, Alistair Johnston, Auston Trusty, Sebastian Tounekti, Benjamin Nygren and Hyunjun Yang all featuring.

But it’s fair to say that the Celtic supporters weren’t having any of it!

They were urging the club to ‘get the band back together’, as well as the continued calls to ‘sack the board.’

Added to that, others were also calling for them to ‘pay the staff’, as fans are clearly agitated and frustrated by how the summer is starting.

Not only does the 2026 summer transfer window open on June 15, but the World Cup is also about to get underway.

Yet, the champions of Scotland don’t even have a manager in place, and the longer this takes, the worse it gets for those in the boardroom.
