Celtic’s win over Kilmarnock was certainly a hard-fought one as the Parkhead club returned to the top of the Scottish Premiership yesterday.
Goals from Celtic heroes Callum McGregor and Nicolas Kuhn sealed the win but, in truth, Celtic had to work much harder than they would have liked to ensure the three points went back up the road to Glasgow.
However, there were a couple of flashpoints in the match, one of which involved the man of the match, Kasper Schmeichel, and Kris Boyd’s reaction to it.
Kilmarnock player appeared to aim an elbow at Celtic hero Kasper Schmeichel
Schmeichel was the hero for Celtic after the big Dane made a number of saves to ensure Celtic not only won the game at Kilmarnock but also ensured Brendan Rodgers’ team didn’t fall behind.
However, there was a moment in the match that left Schmeichel absolutely fuming after a late challenge by Kilmarnock’s Liam Donnelly.
The midfielder was closing down a backpass by Auston Trusty to the Celtic goalkeeper when Donnelly came charging in and appeared to aim an elbow at Schmeichel’s face.
The moment enraged the Denmark international and a two-minute face-off ensued as Schmeichel told Donnelly in no uncertain terms what he thought of the tackle.
Luckily, there was no contact but what will baffle Celtic fans is why VAR did not intervene and have a look at a retrospective red for intent.
What Kris Boyd said about Kilmarnock elbow on Celtic’s Kasper Schmeichel
Kris Boyd was very vocal on with his view on Celtic hero Reo Hatate’s challenge that could have led to a late red card at Rugby Park.
The Japanese midfielder was booked for a high boot on a Kilmarnock player yesterday after the match referee and VAR adjudged it wasn’t a sending-off offence.

Boyd was so enraged that he said ‘red card’ five times on a two-minute rant about the Celtic midfielder. ‘All day long’ was also used even though Kilmarnock boss Derek McInnes said it wasn’t.
So what was Boyd’s view on Donnelly aiming an elbow towards Schmeichel? Surely the former Rangers man would have been just as incensed?
Well, he wasn’t. Nothing was said about it post-match. Even though the Sky Sports cameras never missed a second of the aftermath, there was not one mention of the incident.
It’s little wonder Celtic fans rarely take anything Boyd says seriously when he has selective outrage on what should and should not be a red card when it comes to talking about the Parkhead club.
