Celtic were in communication with Ferencvaros on Saturday as they looked to clarify the situation with away fans visiting Hungary this week.
The Hoops are due to face their Europa League rivals on Thursday night in what will be matchday 4 of the group stage round. Celtic are looking to follow up a 2-0 success at Parkhead 2 weeks ago with another big 3 points this week.
However, they’ll have to do it without any supporters in the ground as things stand. Celtic released a statement back in early October confirming that Ferencvaros had told them no tickets would be made available for their supporters. And after further dialogue on the situation over the weekend, here’s what Ferencvaros told the Hoops about the situation just days away from the fixture:
Celtic’s SLO has also stated that he will provide an update closer to the time if tickets are made available. Celtic today released a statement confirming that the situation remained the same despite vaccine passports being accepted in the EU.
The Hoops stated last month that no tickets were made available due to UK vaccination certificates not being valid for accessing the stadium. However, today’s statement confirms there’s been no further update from Hungary.
Celtic fans were also locked out of Real Betis’ Benito Villamarin Stadium on matchday 1 due to local restrictions.
Celtic away supporters look destined for Ferencvaros disappointment
It seems a bit far-fetched for the dream scenario to actually occur here. After all, can you see a situation in which the Hungarian government will change their legislation just a day or 2 before the game?
Not to mention you would then have such a short turnaround. It seems hardly unlikely that we’ll get any favours from them. Especially considering this is a must-win for Ferencvaros and they would likely prefer a more friendly atmosphere.
Of course, there’s nothing actually stopping Celtic supporters from making the journey to Hungary. If they feel they want to stop off and support their team within the city, they’re free to do so. Stadium access, however, still doesn’t look anywhere near likely.

The Hoops still managed to take a presence to Andalusia when they face off against Betis. Ange Postecoglou’s side also impressed in Spain going forward in what was a fine performance despite the 4-3 defeat.
It remains to be seen whether we can produce a tidier display in Hungary. 3 points there and our qualification prospects will sparkle into life.
Unfortunately, it looks destined to go ahead without any Celtic supporters in attendance.
