Celtic can earn as much as £4.4m in prize money during participation in the UEFA Europa League group stage this season, having already netted £3.84m, UEFA’s published figures reveal.
Through participation in the UEFA Champions League qualifying process, Celtic earned €1.37m (£1.23m).
Each of the clubs who have qualified for the group stages of the Europa League also receive €2.92m (£2.61m) just for taking part, with subsequent money up for grabs based on the team’s performance.
Every win would net Celtic €570,000 (£510,000), with draws worth €190,000 (£170,000). Across the six matches that means £3.06m is up for grabs.
Finishing top of the group would see another €1m (£900,000) received, with the runners up getting €500,000 (£448,000).
Just participating in the Round of 32 would then result in another €500,000 (£448,000).
That all adds up to a total of £4.41m in potential prize money, with more on offer in the knockout rounds should we have a good run in the competition.
Any other money up for grabs?
Celtic will also receive a share of an €84m (£75.2m) pool based on our UEFA coefficient ranking.
A ranking table has been established and the total amount of €84m (£75.2m) has been divided into ‘coefficient shares’, each worth €71,430 (£63,948).
The lowest-ranked team will receive one share. One share will be added to every rank and so the highest-ranked team will receive 48 shares worth €3.42m (£3.06m).
Celtic’s share of TV money will also come from a market pool of €168m (£150m), though that’s obviously split across the entire competition until the final, meaning the Hoops will likely receive a small fraction of it.
With attendance revenue to consider too, it’s clear we’ll be making a healthy amount from European participation this season, even if it pales in comparison to what’s on offer in the UEFA Champions League.
