A club the size of Celtic is always going to be compared to their counterparts down south, especially during a Champions League week.

For some reason, the broadcast media in England love to try and compare Celtic’s (and other Scottish teams’) results to Premier League clubs in Europe despite the vast differences in resources and calibre of players available to the Scottish champions.

It’s a baffling fixation and it has reared its head again as former Soccer AM host, Tim Lovejoy now discusses whether or not Celtic are a bigger club than Chelsea.

Tim Lovejoy admits Celtic are a ‘huge club’ in Chelsea discussion

Lovejoy, a Chelsea fan himself, was holding a quiz where one of his co-hosts, Alex, had to answer six questions about Celtic when the Chelsea talk came up.

Lovejoy told Soccer A-Z, “This week, Alex gets six questions. As Celtic were winning European Cups in 1967, the Lisbon Lions, and they have won the Scottish League 54 times.

“What do you think of that, Tubes?”

Tubes replied, “Are you telling me that you think Celtic are a bigger team than Chelsea?”

Lovejoy: “I’m not saying that.”

Tubes: “That’s what you normally do in this quiz. That’s normally the premise.”

Lovejoy: “Football is not fair, Tubes.”

Tubes: “You’ve not answered the question here, Tim. Are you saying Celtic are a bigger team than Chelsea?”

Lovejoy: “I just didn’t know which way to go with it, you know. Celtic are a huge club, we can’t deny that.”

“But you know, I’ve got to be neutral here.”

Comparing Celtic’s major honours to Chelsea

Talk of being a big club is often conflated with the argument of who has the most money and not based on such things as a worldwide fan base or silverware that has been won.

Celtic’s trophy history is rich and one that is steeped in romance and also earned with the need of major financial backing from an outside party.

It’s worth noting that Chelsea achieved the vast majority of their success after being purchased by Roman Abramovich in 2003.

The Russian billionaire rescued the London club from a financial crisis a pumped hundreds of millions of pounds into Chelsea which made them the richest club in the world at one point.

Would Chelsea have enjoyed that success without that kind of money being invested into the club? It is highly doubtful.
