Eight Celtic players are participating at the 2026 World Cup.
Whether starting or appearing as a substitute, every Celtic representative has now seen minutes at the World Cup, which is being co-hosted by the United States of America, Mexico and Canada.
However, their fortunes have been markedly different; Auston Trusty has successfully navigated to the knockout stages with the USA, whereas Sebastian Tounekti has suffered an early exit with Tunisia.
But following the first round of World Cup fixtures concluding, FIFA released some interesting data around the players, including a surprise name in Australia defender, Jordan Bos, recording the fastest speed at the tournament so far.
Bos recorded a top speed of 36.7 (km/h), with Norway striker Erling Haaland in second (36.5 km/h), and Uzbekistan defender Abdukodir Khusanov in third spot (36.5 km/h).
It will come as little surprise that Daizen Maeda of Japan has recorded the highest top speed of any Celtic player at the tournament so far, though Kieran Tierney is not too far off his pace.
Are you worried Alistair Johnston’s World Cup performances results in him leaving Celtic? 😬🍀
Interest is growing as Johnston thrives with Canada… 🇨🇦
Daizen Maeda is Celtic’s fastest player at the World Cup
It needs to be noted that in some cases, such as Trusty, he has only played around ten minutes, so he hasn’t had the opportunity to really get his motor going.
Trusty clocked 29.1 km/h off the bench in the USMNT’s win over Australia. If he gets more minutes, expect him to challenge for the top speed among his Celtic teammates.
While Anthony Ralston is in the same boat as Trusty, in terms of not getting much game time so far, don’t expect him to come off the bottom because he has only hit a speed of 25.7 km/h for Scotland.
- Daizen Maeda: 33.5 (km/h)
- Kieran Tierney: 33.4 (km/h)
- Alistair Johnston: 33.3 (km/h)
- Sebastian Tounekti: 32.9 (km/h)
- Yang: 32.9 (km/h)
- Benjamin Nygren: 31.5 (km/h)
- Auston Trusty: 29.1 (km/h)
- Anthony Ralston: 25.7 (km/h)

Top ten fastest players at the 2026 World Cup
These speeds have been recorded after every team has played one match, and it will be interesting to see how it changes as the tournament goes on.
But there are some familiar faces in the top ten list, including France star Kylian Mbappe.
| Rank | Player | National Team | Top Speed |
| 1. | Jordan Bos | Australia | 36.7 km/h |
| 2. | Erling Haaland | Norway | 36.5 km/h |
| 3. | Abdukodir Khusanov | Uzbekistan | 36.5 km/h |
| 4. | Mohamed Toure | Australia | 35.8 km/h |
| 5. | Ryan Gravenberch | Netherlands | 35.6 km/h |
| 6. | Alan Minda | Ecuador | 35.5 km/h |
| 7. | Son Heung-min | South Korea | 35.2 km/h |
| 8. | Djed Spence | England | 35.2 km/h |

| =10. | Pedro Neto* | Portugal | 34.8 km/h |
| =10. | Esmir Bajraktarević | Bosnia and Herzegovina | 34.8 km/h |
If any Celtic player can break into the top ten, then it will probably be Maeda, especially given that Japan are on course to progress to the knockout rounds.
But either way, from Halland to Mbappe, expect the familiar names to remain in the top ten.
