Jota was born on March 30, 1999 in Lisbon, Portugal. He joined Benfica’s academy at the age of eight before progressing into the first-team during the 2018/19 campaign.

What does Jota’s celebration mean?
After scoring for Celtic against Rangers in September 2022, Jota ran towards the fans in the Lisbon Lions Stand and raised his fist into the air with his head bowed.
It was the first time Celtic fans saw the celebration from Jota and it has stuck with the winger ever since. And in January 2023, Jota told The Herald that it doesn’t really have a personal meaning to him.
On his celebration against Rangers, Jota said: “It was something in the moment. Really, I’m serious. It was a really good moment for me.
“If people can look back on that moment and it brings them a bit of happiness then I’m happy as well. It’s all about the happiness. I’m just grateful for that.”
How much did Celtic pay for Jota?
Jota first joined Celtic on loan at the start of 2021/22 season under Ange Postecoglou. The club had the option to buy him at the end of the campaign for almost £6.5m.
That’s exactly what happened in the summer of 2022, with Jota putting pen to paper on a five-year contract.
The Portuguese star then left Celtic to sign with Al-Ittihad the following year for £25m, which was a joint record transfer sale for the Hoops at the time.
His spells in Saudi Arabia and subsequently France with Stade Rennais were disastrous, so Celtic decided to bring him home in January 2025. They paid £8m for his permanent return.
It means despite buying Jota twice, Celtic have made a tidy net profit of £10.5m across all three transfer deals.
