For most people, an international call-up would mean everything and to Celtic goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel, it still does.
The big Dane has been honoured by his country on no less than 105 occasions and during this current international break, Schmeichel has the opportunity to pick up another two caps.
Denmark is set to face Switzerland and Serbia over the coming week and Schmeichel is sure to feature in both games.
But here, the Celtic stopper has shared exactly why he is annoyed about one aspect of his latest call-up as the Danes look to take charge in their Nations League group openers.
Schmeichel wants Denmark captaincy
Kasper Schmeichel first got the taste of international captaincy back in the 0-0 draw with England back on August 2020.
Since then he has led Denmark out 17 times including throughout their Euro 2025 campaign in Germany. But now, the armband has been passed on and it’s not gone down well with the Hoops ‘keeper.
Schmeichel told the Politiken [print edition page 11], “If you ask me if I would like to be captain of the national team, of course I would.
“It’s the ultimate honour. I think everyone on the team would love to be captain.
“But I wouldn’t begrudge Pierre [Emile Højbjerg] it, because he has been a fantastic soldier for the Danish national team.”

Schmeichel’s importance to Denmark and Celtic
Clearly captaining his country means a lot to Schmeichel and he is allowed to be upset at the armband being passed on but that doesn’t diminish his importance to his national side and to Celtic.
Schmeichel has already proven his worth to Denmark after their successful Euros campaign this summer and, at the weekend, the big Dane was solid and passed his first true Celtic test with flying colours in the win over Rangers.
The job to replace the iconic Joe Hart was huge and Brendan Rodgers seems to have done that perfectly. Captains armband or not, Schmeichel still has a huge role to play for Denmark this season and for Celtic where the 37-year-old will get to test himself against the cream of Europe in the Champions League.
