Celtic fans are well used to having some famous faces and people in footballing circles admitting that they are big fans of the club.

But never would they have expected to hear Livingston boss, David Martindale, admit that he used to support the club during his six-year stint in the Scottish Premiership.

Of course, there is a caveat to that claim. Martindale spent much of his time battling relegation when in Scotland’s top-flight with Livingston.

But now in the Championship, the Livi Lions gaffer explains why it’s now ‘really refreshing’ not having to cheer on the Bhoys this season.

David Martindale became ‘invested’ in supporting Celtic

Livingston currently sits third in the Scottish Championship just four points from Scott Brown’s Ayr United but with two games in hand.

Looking to get back into Scotland’s top division, Martindale admits it’s a good feeling not having to keep an eye on Celtic’s results this season.

Martindale told the West Lothian Courier [print edition page 35], “I’m not really bothered by what happens at Falkirk or Ayr, or any other club. I’m just focused on our club and trying to win the next game.

“That’s how I’ll spend the rest of the season and that’s really refreshing because I spent six years in the Premiership watching every single fixture.

“Every Saturday or Sunday, I became a Rangers or Celtic fan because, generally, they were playing St Mirren or St Johnstone or something.

“But it is refreshing to come away from that, where my focus is on my own club instead of looking at results elsewhere.

“If we’d played on the Saturday, then we’d be looking at St Johnstone, St Mirren or Motherwell playing Celtic on the Sunday and you become invested in that.

“In the Premiership, 90% of the season I was a Celtic, Rangers and Livingston fan, whereas at Livingston now I’m just really focused on us and what we do.”

Celtic will look for confidence-boosting SPFL win after Champions League disappointment

Celtic now look forward to putting a Champions League wrong right this weekend and aim to get back to winning ways in their next fixture against Ross County.

Unbeaten domestically, Brendan Rodgers’ side will be hurting and will be looking to prove their critics wrong with a big win in Dingwall.

With an international break looming after Sunday’s game, Rodgers will want a confidence-boosting performance against The Staggies who are currently sitting seventh in the Scottish Premiership table.
