For all of the negativity that surrounded last night’s result, Karamoko Dembele getting another Celtic outing was interesting.
The Hoops supporters had hoped to see more fringe players and youth products be given a shot by John Kennedy. Especially considering there wasn’t anything tangible to play for at Pittodrie last night.
But the only Lennoxtown graduate to be given a chance was Dembele. Indeed, he came on for the final 10 minutes and showed some decent skill.
There was a noticeable lack of an end product at times, but Karamoko showed plenty of positive traits. He was always looking to get on the ball and take on his man. In what was only his fifth appearance for the club, there were reasons for optimism.
Or so there would’ve been.
Contract situation makes it difficult to get excited about Karamoko Dembele for Celtic fans
Unfortunately, Dembele’s contract situation makes it difficult to get too excited here. The winger is into the final few months of his deal and could sign for another club today if he chose to.
There have been no signs that the young winger is going to extend his stay at Parkhead either. That’s another thing he could do as soon as he wanted.
Some may look at his cameo appearance last night and be filled with promise. That it could be a sign of Dembele coming round and perhaps getting set to put pen to paper on an extended contract. But there’s very little to suggest that would be the case.
Back in December, the Athletic reported that Celtic had grown disappointed over the Dembele situation. He was reportedly being monitored by teams such as Borussia Dortmund, whilst there had been concerns about his application.
Him making an appearance last night could be a sign his attitude has improved. But as of yet, he’s still on the same contract he was back then. He’s still due to leave the club this summer. If all we’re doing is improving the prospects of another club’s future talent, its’ hardly in our best interests.
Until that changes, his flashy cameo appearance last night is difficult to get excited about. Hopefully, we see some movement on his contract before he’s due to depart.
