Why the Celtic board must listen to what Brendan Rodgers said about the club’s ‘attitude’ to transfers

Brendan Rodgers has been very vocal about the quality he needs to improve his current Celtic team to take it forward this season.

The Celtic manager is looking to not only defend the Scottish Premiership, the Scottish Cup and win the League Cup but he also looking to make his mark in Europe in the Champions League.

But to do that costs money and whilst Celtic have plenty of it, the club does have a successful player training model that they stick to as well which the Hoops boss has brilliantly addressed this week.

Rodgers tells the Celtic board to take transfer ‘risk’

Brendan Rodgers has told Celtic that the club must look to improve the current strategy in the transfer market for two reasons and the first is that if they do, they will reap even bigger financial rewards in the future.

At this week’s Celtic press conference, Rodgers said, “It’s the attitude to risk. It’s the level of risk. You know you can sign a player for one or two million pounds, fine and you might sell them for £10 million.

“But you can sign a player for seven or eight [million] and maybe sell them for £30 to £40m. It’s the same thing but it’s really trusting the process and trusting the team of people that can work very, very hard and then allow you to get the players in.”

Celtic supporters are ‘deserving’ of transfer investment

The second reason Rodgers wants the board to improve investment in the team is because he believes the Celtic fans deserve it.

The Hoops boss was impressed with the commitment of the supporters in Celtic’s US Tour but has also praised the fans for their continued financial backing of the club and he believes that investment must be shown on the park.

Rodgers continued, “The Celtic supporter is deserving of that. What they invest week in, week out to this team worldwide, merchandise, everything.

“It’s a duty here for us to try and get the best team we possibly can on the field to inspire them to come and watch their team.

“And that’s what we try to do by the football that we play but that will always be elevated by the level of player that you have.

“So that’s our notion over these final weeks of the of the season to try and look to have a really strong team.”

Brendan Rodgers absolutely nailed it with these comments and after Celtic invested £9.5m in Adam Idah, he is now challenging the club to continue that to bring even better players to Paradise.

The Hoops gaffer saw first-hand last summer what happens when you continually shop at the lower end of the transfer scale and whilst spending big doesn’t necessarily guarantee that those signings will be a success, it does increase those chances.

Odsonne Edouard, Jota and Cameron Carter-Vickers are proof of that and when the quality is there, the Celtic fans are kept happy, turn out in their droves and, in turn, huge transfer fees follow when they produce on the big European stage.
