Wilfried Nancy says one of his backroom staff was ‘so emotional’ as dream Celtic move came true

Wilfried Nancy has revealed that he has helped one of his coaching staff fulfil a lifelong dream of being affiliated to Celtic.

Nancy brought in three coaches with him after completing the move from Columbus Crew.

They will all be in the dugout alongside the Frenchman for his first game in charge as Celtic manager.

While we may not see anything too radical straightaway, the 48-year-old’s own style will be stamped on the squad over the coming months.

One of those who will be influential is his assistant Kwame Ampadu, and Nancy revealed an emotional story about his number two.

Wilfried Nancy reveals that Kwame Ampadu is a Celtic fan

Ampadu has been Nancy’s right-hand man at CF Montreal and Columbus, where they both enjoyed success.

The chance to work at Celtic is something he has been waiting a long time for, with Nancy admitting that he was left emotional about the role as the Hoops are ‘his club.’

He said: “I told the board that if Kwame doesn’t come, I will not come! No, I’m joking. Kwame is my friend. He’s my guy. He’s the oldest guy in the staff. And obviously, the background that he has is really important. He knows the culture.

“He was so emotional when I told him that we have the possibility to come here, because Celtic is his club too. So, this is a really nice story. Obviously, he knows also people within the club.

“And obviously, his experience is going to be massive. And that’s why he’s with me. And that’s why we want to assess and process everything.”

Is Kwame Ampadu related to Ethan Ampadu?

The former Republic of Ireland U21 international shares the same surname as Leeds United star Ethan Ampadu, and that is by no coincidence.

Kwame is the father of the Premier League star and will now get the chance to be closer to his son after spells abroad.

Ethan is currently thriving in the top flight of English football and will be hoping to make the 2026 World Cup with Wales but maybe one day in the future, we will see him wear the green and white.
