“Won’t happen again”; Celtic move quickly to address Friday fan concerns

Celtic have moved quickly to address a controversial social media post published earlier on Friday.

Promoting the anniversary of winning the club’s first major trophy, a Twitter message advertising a debt collection agency was published.

For many concerned supporters, association with this kind of business conflicts with the founding ethos of the club.

As we discussed earlier it prompted a pretty furious backlash.

The club’s supporter liaison officer confirmed staff moved quickly when they realised the error and that the company advertised had in fact been on a list of excluded businesses.

Genuine mistakes happen, so we’ll not lay on the criticism too thickly here.

It’s heartening to know that the club does take into account fan feedback and that the wheels spin quickly when things like this happen.

The issue of who should and shouldn’t sponsor Celtic is a growing one amongst some sections of the support. There are those who feel the club should not be associating with betting companies for example.

The realities of Scottish football finance being what they are, that’s unlikely to change anytime soon. It’s notable that the main competitions in Scotland are sponsored either by betting or alcohol companies primarily.

Feelings on that will vary from person to person. My personal opinion is that Celtic do their best to compete in the market available to them, which can’t be easy.

In this case, fans are correct to voice their displeasure at certain companies given access to the club’s social media channels. Having a direct feed to hundreds of thousands of people comes with social responsibility for a club like Celtic.

Efforts to put the work of Celtic FC Foundation front and centre are also noted and welcomed, helping some of the most vulnerable sections of Scottish society.
