It’s fair to say that Gianluigi Buffon is one of the greatest players to ever grace the game.

A drawer bursting full of winners’ medals, legendary status at Juventus and a World Cup win with Italy are all fine arguments. As are the litany of individual honours he’s received in his homeland, from UEFA and FIFA. He’s a global superstar.

The goalkeeper knows a thing or two about shot-stopping, so it’s great to hear him so publicly back Celtic hero Joe Hart this week.

Buffon gave an interview to The Daily Record this week, praising Hart’s ability and suggesting all he needed at this stage of his career was to find a proper home.

The Italian is pleased he’s found one at Celtic.

He said: “The way Joe is playing this season is no surprise to me he has always been a great goalkeeper. He just needed a place to call home again. He is a player I watched develop and I saw he had everything that was needed to be one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

“That player who was No.1 for Manchester City and England didn’t go away. He just needed to find his confidence again. I have always said you have to be a little bit crazy to be a goalkeeper because you are so isolated.

“As a defender, you are part of a defence. As a midfielder, part of a midfield. But the goalkeeper is the isolated player on the field. You make a mistake and all eyes are on you. That is what happened with Joe. He made a couple of mistakes and people just decided he was not top level anymore.

“He needed a bit of love to find his level again and he has obviously got that love at Celtic. The top player is back and it is good to see.”

Hart has had plenty of critics over the years and there were even some sceptics of his ability to adjust to life at Celtic under Ange Postecoglou.

However, he truly has become a key part of the manager’s plans and the dressing room at large.

The veteran has quickly established himself as one of the big leaders in the group. At the same time, he’s built up an excellent rapport with Celtic supporters – especially those who travel home and away to watch the Bhoys.

We’ve found a goalkeeper we can trust and Buffon is spot on with his comments.
