Some Celtic and Republic of Ireland supporters believe that Neil Lennon could find his next job in Dublin.
Lennon has been out of work since leaving Celtic in February after a horrific campaign under his tenure. A failure to achieve 10-in-a-row was combined with a dismal Betfred Cup exit to Ross County and a shocking Europa League campaign. His position, in the end, was untenable.
However, some would argue the same can be said for Ireland manager Stephen Kenny. He’s now failed to win any of his first 10 games in charge, and for seven of them they had failed to score.
Last night, however, Irish football hit rock-bottom. A 1-0 home defeat to Luxembourg has effectively ended the ROI’s chances of World Cup qualification before they’ve even started. The set-back has Irish fans furious with Kenny, and his position is looking weaker and weaker by the game.
Kenny had already failed to impress in the recent Nations League campaign, in which Ireland came close to relegation to the C League.
And now, people are already talking about his potential successor after one of the worst results and performances in their history.
Neil Lennon will have won a watch if he bags Ireland job
Lennon has yet to be seriously linked with another job since leaving Celtic. Time hasn’t healed the 10IAR wound so far, and neither it should. We at 67HailHail won’t forget the way he treated the supporters and the club this season just because he’s finally gone.
If he was able to walk into the Ireland job, he could count himself a lucky man. It would certainly be a more prestigious gig than many would’ve thought he was capable of achieving.
Lennon hasn’t yet tried his hand at international football. Considering one of his main flaws has always generally been recruitment, it may suit him better having to focus solely on man-management.
Who knows what the future holds for Lennon in truth? He’ll be delighted, however, that people are still touting him for big jobs after the hellish year we’ve had at Parkhead.
