Yet another stout backer has changed sides and urged Neil Lennon to leave Celtic today in Stiliyan Petrov.
As Celtic continue to stutter from disaster to disaster, Lennon has managed to remain in his post. The Hoops manager has overseen an utterly chaotic season both on and off the pitch, with many fans believing our campaign is now over.
The manager appeared angry with John Hartson yesterday as he stated his opinion means “nothing” to him (Daily Record). This came after Hartson had admitted that it was time for Neil to leave.
However, Hartson has been backed up by another former Lennon team-mate in Petrov. He’s been speaking on the Celtic Huddle podcast today, and for the first time, called for the manager to give up his post.
“Yeah I think so. I think now it comes to the point where Celtic have to make a change. I think that it needs a different approach. A new manager has to come in with his staff.
“A leader. Someone who can lead the team in a different direction. Somebody who can motivate and change the style of play.
“I was in a dressing room when that happened. In 200 when Martin O’Neill came in for John Barnes. The change was needed. He was somebody who could lead the team, the mental approach in a different direction. We managed to do that.”
Another pro Lennon backer now wants him to leave Celtic; when does this end?
I never thought I would see the day when so many ex-Lennon team-mates would come out in force against him.
This isn’t normal times at Celtic. It’s now at the stage where I’m wondering whether there’s ever been this level of anger and force from a support to get the manager out?
Sure, Tony Mowbray came in for hellish criticism from a fairly early stage in his Celtic career. John Barnes was also sacked not before time when supporters’ anger was at its peak level. But we now feel as though we’ve entered new territory with Lennon.
We’ve now entered a period where the board have decided to ignore the supporters. Decided to ignore the calls for him to be sacked. Decided to ignore incessant demands from their paying customers for several months.
It feels sickening to say, but there’s now an element of support that’s starting to grow a strong dislike for our manager. I’ve never seen that watching Celtic. I’ve never seen such genuine levels of disconnect and almost sheer hatred for this board.
You can add Petrov and Hartson in there alongside Chris Sutton. He’s another that knows his old pal’s time is up (Glasgow Times). And it has been for some-time. Yet as we continue to progress deeper into the season, Lennon continues to be stubbornly sticking to his guns. This really isn’t helping his reputation amongst an already fuming fan-base.
