‘You watch…’ Chris Sutton drops Celtic truth to Kris Boyd after his Rangers rant

Celtic have the chance this week to push further away at the top of the Premiership table.

Brendan Rodgers watched Celtic beat Ross County 5-0 on Saturday and they now have a four-point lead, with a game in hand, ahead of their Wednesday night showdown against second-placed Aberdeen.

The ruthless nature of Celtic’s play has been showing for months, including scoring four goals in the second half at Tynecastle last week and five in the opening half against Ross County.

What’s even better about the most recent display is that Rodgers made several changes, six in total, and four of those players – Liam Scales, the popular Luke McCowan, Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah all got on the scoresheet.

Whilst Celtic are scoring goals for fun, over at Rangers, it’s still doom and gloom, even when they are winning, as they did via an own goal against St Johnstone on Sunday.

The table doesn’t lie as the champions are 11 points clear of Philippe Clement’s side and Martin O’Neill feels the Celtic and Rangers gap will grow.

Whilst the legendary manager dropped some hard truths on one platform, Chris Sutton was doing the same to a frustrated Kris Boyd on another.

Celtic have scored nine goals in their last two Premiership matches – half of the tally Rangers have hit all season long.

It further proves the gap between the two and it’s perhaps a reason why Boyd sounds so frustrated and he ranted at ‘half of the teams in the Scottish Premiership’ scoring more goals than Rangers this term.

A smiling Sutton sitting next to him just wanted to rub salt into the wounds and provided the example to him – Celtic – and how they are on a ‘different level’ to their supposed title rivals, as he told Sky Sports Football (01/12/24 at 2:30 pm).

Boyd ranted: “I always preferred a partner, but the modern game seems to be one up top. I look at a lot of strikers now and the focus is running into wide areas. Getting the team up the pitch. Strikers are paid to score goals, especially when you put on that Rangers jersey. The amount of chances that should be created for you if you are in the right areas. You should be hitting high numbers and it’s not happening, for whatever reason. Rangers aren’t scoring goals. Half of the teams, prior to this weekend, in the Scottish Premiership have scored more than Rangers, it’s not right.”

“But why is it? Because they aren’t creating enough opportunities,” responded Sutton on Rangers’ lack of goals.

“Why is it that you speak about the disconnect? I think that’s absolutely right. As of this moment, it’s not clicking and they aren’t combining. You watch, I am not bringing Celtic into it, but you see the way that they connect in forward areas and they are on a different level, at this moment in time.”

Celtic’s free-scoring forwards

Everywhere you look, there are goals galore from Celtic and the forward areas are thriving more than ever before.

Nicolas Kuhn is the man of the moment for Celtic and he is probably the best player in Scotland right now, with 11 goal involvements to his name in the Premiership, as posted by Transfermarkt.

Then you have the man leading the line for the Bhoys, Kyogo Furuhashi, the Glasgow derby day king, who is still racking up his numbers.

It’s been proven time and time again that Daizen Maeda is a nightmare to play against, sometimes his stats don’t show it, but five goal involvements in the Premiership, not forgetting his recent strike in the Champions League, prove how much of a difficult customer he is.

Then you have a man in Adam Idah, who is supposedly deemed as a back-up option, yet he has five goals in ten league matches, including a goal in Europe.

So, imagine if he was earning more minutes, just like Kyogo has done over the years, he would be ripping it up and still is with just 376 minutes to his name.
